초록

This study analyzes the phenomenon of energy weaponization from the perspective of energy security and examines the response strategies of major countries to seek ways to strengthen South Korea’s energy security. Energy weaponization refers to the act of controlling energy supply or manipulating prices by energy exporting countries to exert influence on importing countries, posing a serious threat to national security. The case analysis reveals that Russia’s natural gas supply disruption, the oil embargo by Middle Eastern oil-producing countries, and China’s rare earth export restrictions are representative examples of energy weaponization. In response, major countries are pursuing strategies such as diversifying energy sources, expanding stockpiles, and strengthening international cooperation. As South Korea is also vulnerable to energy weaponization due to its high dependence on energy imports, it should enhance its energy security capabilities through ▲diversification of import sources ▲improvement of emergency response systems ▲enhancement of energy efficiency ▲strengthening of energy security diplomacy. This study is significant in that it raises awareness of the importance of energy security and provides useful implications for establishing South Korea’s energy security policy.
